Program:
Lectures

  • The cell, structural and functional unit of living des organisms.
  • Biological membranes:

- The plasma membrane allows the identification of the cell in relation to its environment
- Internal biological membranes create intracellular compartments having distinct functions in eukaryote cells
- The cytosol compartment (+ cytoskeleton of eukaryote cells)

  • Energy and nutriments supply of the cell

- Autotroph and heterotroph notion
- Energy value of the organic components and energy conversion in the form of ATP (phosphorylation)
- Cell processes of energy conversion (cell respiration, photosynthesis, catabolism, electron transport chain, mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and chloroplast photophosphorylation).
- Some examples of integrated operation of a cell in relation to its nutrition
- Cell hydration and water activity

  • Genetic information of the cell:

- Nature of the genetic information (DNA)
- Cellular organization of the genetic information in prokaryote and eukaryote (phylogenetic relationship between bacteria, mitochondria and chloroplasts)
- Genetic information expression
- Examples of the synthesis of a cytosolic protein and a secreted or membrane protein

  • Cell divisions:

- Cell cycle in eukaryote (without the molecular mechanisms)

  • Tutorials

Numerous exercises will be proposed to students in relation to the subjects seen during the lectures

  • Lab classes

During la classes:
oThe students will learn to apply a protocol in order to visualize cells or cell structures with a light microscope
oAround the construction of a scientific poster, the students will learn to write a scientific text, to carry out a bibliographic study on a given theme of cell biology, and to report this study by making a poster and an oral presentation


Compétences à acquérir

Objectives:
The aim of this course is:

  • To know the basic general notions of cell biology
  • To understand the complementarity of nutrition mode of a cell (autotroph versus heterotroph)
  • To learn how to apply a simple protocol in order to observe cells or cell structures in light microscopy
  • To gain a critical thinking and a scientific culture (bibliographic study) built on cell biology

Acquired competences:
At the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Master the basic concepts of cell biology, common to prokaryote and eukaryote cells
  • Identify the biological processes underlying the studied functions
  • Use simple techniques of cytological staining
  • Search scientific information and transpose them in a poster format
